Signs of the Times: This project will deal with Indiana's advertising heritage. It will contain mostly older signage, often neon, of restaurants, motels, theaters, etc. Below are some images we have so far. What makes this project different from all our others is that it will be in color--but only partially. Because signs are designed to catch your attention, they often use bright colors that don't always translate well into black-and-white. So, I am shooting them in black-and-white, then I'm hand-coloring just the sign itself with transparant oil paints. These paints were popular in the 1950s, before color film became widely used. We don't yet have a publication date for this project, so please stay tuned. |
